Missouri High School Cyber Security Challenge 2019

The Missouri High School Cyber Security Challenge is a multi-round competition that tests students’ skills in networking, programming and operating system security. Up to 450 students will compete in Round 1. The top 10 teams will compete in round two at the MOREnet Annual Conference at Tan-Tar-A Resort on October 9. Teams consist of three high school students and one adult sponsor, and participation is free.

Important Dates

  • August 13: Registration opens.(opens in new window)
  • September 9: Registration closes.
  • September 13: Credentials sent to students.
  • September 16 – 19: Round one completed at school.
  • September 20: Round one winners announced. Top 10 teams advance to round two.
  • October 9: Round two held at MOREnet Annual Conference between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Challenge Skills

Participants should have a knowledge base and some familiarity (in theory) with one to two of the concepts below. Beginners will practice the techniques associated with the theory and advanced players will demonstrate the knowledge, skill or ability to perform them in this cyber exercise challenge.

  • Linux command line knowledge
  • Windows and Linux service exploitation
  • Port scanning, networking scanning, vulnerability scanning
  • SQL injection
  • PHP code exploitation
  • PII discovery
  • Privilege escalation
  • Brute force password attacks
  • Password hash cracking
  • Forensics and reverse engineering
  • Reconnaissance or open source intelligence (OSINT) gathering
  • Understanding of basic network functions, standards and protocol
  • Familiarity with a scripting language, with a focus on Python and PowerShell
  • Some knowledge of common logical security controls

The Challenge will culminate during the MOREnet Annual Conference with the students accessing Alphaville (Cyber Capture the Flag Environment), followed by an awards ceremony.
